Summary Integration of wind power plants in power system and coordination of their operation with other power plants is primarily conditioned by the following aspects. First, expansion of transmission network, ensuring the reliable delivery and transmission of the generated electric energy. Second, the implication of power system operation due to unpredictability and variability of wind power, requiring the adaptation of classic power plants operation to assure the constant balance of electric energy. Possibilities of such a support are limited and they are connected with other power plants characteristics, while hydro power plants are, accordingly, an ideal complement to wind power plants. The third element refers to the dynamic stability of power system. The research project is aimed to study the first two aspects, i.e. to propose the appropriate model for the optimal integration of wind power plants from the viewpoint of the transmission network development, as well as planning and control of power system. The basic hypothesis refers to the possibility of determining the optimal level of wind power penetration in power system, taking into consideration technical and economic aspects of power system planning with achievement of the given level of the operational security. The expected results will be primarily studied at the level of Croatian power system. In short-term, the application of research results is expected (partly or on the whole) in the definition of regulatory framework and technical codes for the mentioned problems. In long-term, the results will be measured with difficulty, since for the total comprehension of the mentioned problems further researches are needed. The importance of the research is exceptional because of the situation in Croatian energy sector. At the moment, wind power is the most perspective renewable source in Croatia because of the average lowest production costs and the great wind potential. According to experiential evaluations, scientifically ungrounded, it is reckoned the possibility of construction of 400 MW wind power plants in the next 5-6 years. However, the researches of wind potential, which are conducted on numerous locations throughout Croatia, show that the possible installed power is certainly over 2000 MW. Therefore, it is necessary to give scientifically founded answers to questions how many wind power plants can be accepted by the power system, with which dynamics, and with which implications.
