Summary Thanks to the computer tremendous development, various technique problems were calculated by various numerical methods. As one of the favourite method in numerical analysis, the finite element method has been widely used especially dealing with continuum. To the researchers best knowledge, it is not known that the finite element method is used for electric network calculation. The goal of this research is to make effective algorithm for circuit and power system transient analysis. Each part of power system (generator, transformer, transmission line, etc.) will be treated as finite element and finite element library will be made. We expect that this algorithm will have major advantages over numerical procedures based on the nodal method. In case of any disturbances in power system, nodal voltage and branch currents will be obtained. The results of our research will be used to modelling Croatian Electricity power system (HEP) and also to modelling industrial power system plants. The result validation will be obtained by measurements on Croatian Electricity power system (HEP). The proposed research will offer better method for calculation in every day practise, which should be concurrent to up to now used numerical methods. The proposed numerical procedure will be simpler and calculations results will gave complete information about electromechanical variables of power system in time domain.
