Summary Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) is the ability of an object to function properly in its existing electromagnetic (EM) environment, while at the same time not creating any non-permitted EM disturbances in it. The object whose EMC is analyzed is usually an electrical device. However, a biological system can also be regarded as a victim of EM interference (EMI) and potentially suffer from health effects. The key component of EMC testing and EM health effects research is measurement of quantities that describe EM interactions. For radiofrequency range, the basic quantity to measure is EM field (in EM environment or inside EMI victim). Measurement process is based on three components: measuring instruments, test site and measurement procedures. If any of these components is not adequate for the analyzed problem, the aim of the measurement and its results become questionable. All three components should continuously adjust to the development of new communication technologies and the associated problems. This is one of the main tasks of this scientific project. The project will primarily research: applicability of existing EM field measurement methods for measuring real signals in modern radiocommunication systems; complex EM environments characterization (ship, closed space with varying configuration of objects); human EMI exposure assessment procedures, specifically for such complex environments (real-life conditions); and human compatibility with EM environment. In this last area there is still a need to do more basic research. It will be based on the measurements of EM interferences, observation of their effects inside the organism and the analysis of the EM effects on biological tissue. The project will, based on the scientific research within its scope, present: innovation of components of the measurement process; application of measurements to the analysis and solution of EMC problems in complex environments; application to the human EMI exposure assessment; the results of basic research of EM health effects, and shaping of all results into documents applicable to experts and society in general. The scientific research will be based on laboratory and field electromagnetic measurements. The newly established methodology will be applicable to all given aspects of research. The activities of this multidisciplinary scientific project rely on the rich experience of the researchers, both in scientific analysis and practical problem solving.
