Summary Engineering optimization is directly or indirectly based on processes and solutions which can be observed in the nature. In line with the bionics concepts, a number of evolutionary methodologies as well as simmulated annealing, genetic algorithms and neural networks as function approximators are algorithmically built based on analogies with simplified biological models. Different families of sociological and cultural algorithms are also in development. The project is compatible with recent trends of research in optimization, and it will also be linked with some EU projects, for example Framework program IV - FRONTIER, which, as a spin-off company, has become a strong industrial platform. The project is in line with the documents on the long- and short-term development of science in Croatia and contributes to objectives listed in the document on the development of competitiveness of Croatia. Beyond the mentioned cooperation with an EU FP IV project, the project belongs to two strategic priorities: (1) new materials and structures, and (2) application of ICT via methods of artificial inteligence. The results of the project contribute to the development of the industry. The project is interdisciplinary and internationally networked. Based on numerical tools developed so far, the following functionality is planned: - Variations of adaptive evolutionary algorithms - Superposition of biological, cognitive and group behaviour patterns in evolutionary algorithms in the adaptive sense. Modelling of some biologic and sociologic patterns and integration into evolutionary optimization. Superposition of transgenerational transfer of features and intragenerational communication in the population. - Applications in solid mechanics and engineering design. Applications: beams with constraints (mechanics of materials), dynamic systems, eg. composite glued sandwich plates with corrugated cores and design of specific machine elements. It will include algorithmic development and numerical testing of the respective performance in engineering applications of optimization. This project expands the research of the team in previous projects and the acquired knowledge and experience. Within the project scope, efforts will be made towards paralellization of numerical processing and functional and numerical integration of • computer-aided-design (CAD) programs • finite-element-method (FEM) based analysis • optimization with corresponding procedures.
