Summary As a starting point in developing idea for this project’s proposal is a fact that in Republic of Croatia exists a huge industrial potential, especially in the area of aluminum alloys (TLM Šibenik). These facilities are use for production semi products with relatively low add values and efficiency. One way to increase these values is production of semi products that have improved properties such as strength and formability. These macroscopic properties are strongly influenced by microstructural properties of the material. The improvements of strength and formability of aluminum alloys could be achieved by monitoring the microstructure. This way the assumptions for widening pallets of semi products will be established. Simultaneously, this allows developing cooperational networks between one strong producer of aluminum semi products with small companies in the region. This represents the basic hypotheses of this project. The objectives of the proposed research are to develop models and perform relevant experiments to answer at least on the following questions: 1. How microstructure can improve plastic behavior of wrought aluminum alloys? 2. How alloys sensitivity on processes that occur during deformation influence the grain size and this way on the formability of wrought aluminum alloys? The properties of existing aluminum alloys can be improved only by complete understanding of processes that cause changes of their microstructure. The optimization of manufacturing processes is the base goal of each society. Therefore, it is expected that proposed project give a contribution in the science and industrial praxis at least in two directions. The first direction represents adjusting the optimal parameters of various manufacturing processes (casting, rolling, extrusion and other) that should result with improved properties of selected materials. The second direction is developing calculation methods for predicting material properties as a function of its microstructure. The evaluation of these researches activities in scientific sense will be through publications, conference presentations, and websites. The engineering educational programs at University of Split will benefit from the opportunity to develop and share curricular materials associated with this research. This project will provide unique opportunities for participating undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students to benefit from interactions with researchers from diverse area of science.
