Summary The usual way of structures and machine parts dimensioning is comparison of the highest stresses in the cross section of the component and allowed stresses of basic material. This way of dimensioning partially satisfies in practice, but in many case it is not correct. In the case of mainly statically loaded structures, highest (and especially average) stresses are deeply under the ultimate strength of material, so that types of structures are often over-dimensioned. In the case of variable stresses and in the cases of fatigue calculations, more frequent are phenomena of fatigue cracks and total failures of components and constructions. The aims of investigation should be detecting the cases in which the methods of fatigue strength have to be implemented from the cases in which it is not necessary, to propose as simple as possible method of fatigue life calculation, to describe qualitatively and quantitatively all the influent parameters which besides the stress itself reduce the fatigue life and reliability of components (material parameters, the shape, the workmanship, loading, environment, etc.), to propose the procedure for prediction of remaining fatigue life and reliability of existing machines and structures undamaged and structures containing the fatigue cracks and other damages. Expected results are, besides the knowledge expansion, possibilities of optimisation of constructions, applying the new materials and durability checking, all from the fatigue point of view. From the same point of view the problems of repairmen of damaged structures will be investigated. The check of some existing and new cogitations will be done primarily by experimental methods (experiments on servo hydraulic fatigue test machine, strain gauges) and by using the analytical and numerical methods. The numerical methods will be used for stress analysis, contact stress description, neural network application in fatigue, structure optimisation, etc. The application of investigation results is possible on all kinds of machines and structures, especially on transport systems (ships, airplanes, road and railways vehicles), civil constructions, machinery, etc. Application of aluminium alloys for small ships and building facades, as well as metal foams for carrying, dumping and isolation elements. Finally, the results of these investigations will cut the workmanship, use and after-use recycling costs of different machines and structures.
