Summary A perpetual need for scrutinizing the electromagnetic phenomena in high voltage power system and its environment is still persistent, as well as a need for accurate numerical modelling of those phenomena. The main goal of this project is sought through an upgrade of the existing and development of the novel electromagnetic models for the harmonic and transient analysis of complex earthing grids. Developed computer programs will allow a solution of important engineering problems in superior execution time compared with those algorithms and software packages developed so far. Besides, here developed electromagnetic models will have a wider applicable area. Hence, it will be able to efficiently attack unsolved problems such as the transient analysis of complex earthing grids buried in multilayer medium, which includes air and horizontally stratified multilayer soil with arbitrary number of layers. A second important goal of the proposed scientific project is a development of novel algorithm for the stochastic efficiency assessment of the lightning protection systems (LPS) of structures and high voltage switchyards. Novelty of the proposed algorithm lays in the fact that parts of the protected structures as well as the parts of the LPS could be modeled with surfaces as well as with linear segments. Previously developed models were confined to linear segments. By the introduction of this novelty, developed stochastic model will be more adequate for the efficiency assessment of LPS for the buildings and complex geometry structures. It is expected that upon conclusion of the third research year, a complete electromagnetic model for the harmonic and transient analysis of complex earthing grids will be fully developed and tested. These tests will include comparison of results with measurements and/or results obtained through available software packages (ATP-EMTP, CDEGS). By applying the developed software programs, it will become possible to enhance the reliability of the electrical, electronic and telecommunication equipment, as well as human safety aspects. In theoretical and numerical sense, conducted research will yield a significant scientific contribution.
