Summary One of the basic requirements of the information society is development of the information and communication technology (ICT) which will make possible the access to information and communication services, especially to Internet, regardless of the time and place. This aim will be achieved through development of advanced heterogeneous communication networks which will enable seamless interconnection between different fixed, wireless and mobile communication networks with complementary characteristics such as transmission rate and coverage range. The quality of services to wireless and mobile networks users will be considerably enhanced. Interconnection between ad hoc and wireless sensor networks and networks of greater capacity will enable development of new services and systems in a number of areas such as health protection, environment protection and transportation systems. The research within this project will cover: advanced heterogeneous network architectures and protocols, security in heterogeneous network environments, and digital signal processing methods for increasing capacity and enhancing the quality of signal transmission in heterogeneous network environments. The research will result in proposals for advanced heterogeneous network architectures, development of simulation models, and realization of the demonstration models of advanced heterogeneous networks. The possibilities of applications of heterogeneous network environments in carst areas and on islands will be particularly explored. Implementation of pilot projects based on the application of ad hoc and sensor networks is planned. The new methods and systems for security provision in heterogeneous network environments will be developed. The new adaptive signal processing methods for heterogeneous network environments will be explored. Simulation models of algorithms and systems will be designed and developed. The results of the research will be reffered at scientific conferences, published in indexed journals and in research monographs. Results will be verified via simulations and experiments. Demonstration models and pilot networks will be designed and deployed. The proposed research will contribute to the competitiveness in the area of ICT, compliance with European research programmes, development of information society and to the increase of the employment.
